Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi has told the European Parliament to pay more attention to the human rights situation in her country.
Ebadi told EU lawmakers in Brussels that while negotiations with Tehran focus on the issue of the regime's controversial nuclear program, the bloc should also raise the issue of human rights violations in Iran. Ebadi said she believed that more Iranian individuals involved in human rights abuse should have their assets frozen in Europe and face travel restrictions. She also noted that the EU also should make sure that the regime doesn't use European satellites to convey government propaganda. Ebadi, a former lawyer and judge in Iran, said that nothing would change in her homeland as long as the judiciary remained unreformed and associated with the security services. By RFE/RL
