Bloomberg Businessweek-The suggested involvement of Iran in ending Syria’s political strife has pitted Russia against the U.S. as a United Nations peace plan unraveled with shots fired at observers of a UN-backed truce.
With his cease-fire agreement in tatters, UN envoy Kofi Annan warned the General Assembly that more needs to be done to prevent Syria from sliding into civil war after two massacres less than two weeks apart. He joined Russia in wanting Iran, as a country with influence in Syria, to assist efforts to seek a possible successor to President Bashar al-Assad.
Kurdish political prisoner Mohammad Mehdi Zalieh dies in prison

Mohammad Mehdi Zalieh a Kurdish political prisoner and a sportsman, almost 46, passed away after suffering two decades imprisonment and torture, in Gohardasht prison on June 4.He was sentenced to life in prison. He spent his captivity in Mahabad, Oromieh and Gohardasht prisons. He suffered from lung disease, and his disease deteriorated due to horrific condition of Section 4 of Gohardasht prison.But in order to impose more pressure, the executioners refused to provide medical care for Mehdi Zalieh, and only when there was no hope, they moved his sick body to a hospital outside the prison for justifying his dead.

Already living in exile, Persian hip hop artist and poet Shahin Najafi is now also in hiding after receiving death threats over a satirical new song.
Based in Germany since 2005, the young Iranian rapper and poet released Naghi earlier this spring. The song, which he describes as a comic work, is written as a plea for a venerated historical imam to return and solve Iran’s problems — which for Najafi range from “sanctions and the rising dollar” to nose jobs and prayer rugs made in China.

Human rights activist Mohmmad Seddigh Kaboodvand was transferred to the Evin Prison infirmary on the tenth day of his hunger strike against his unfair detention by the Iranian government. Kaboodvand began his hunger strike on May 26th after he was denied a furlough in order to visit his sick son, and he announced that he would continue to strike until he was allowed to see his child.

A proxy tool used by people in Iran and Syria to bypass local censorship controls seems to be the victim of a new strain of spyware.
Web users in Iran and Syria attempting to use a proxy tool to freely surf the Internet are reportedly being tracked by a new Trojan.The proxy software known as Simurgh is used by many Iranian and Syrian citizens to make it seem as if their secure Internet connections are coming from a different country. Such proxy programs are common ways to mask a user’s PC and Internet information in order to circumvent local censorship restrictions.

CyCon 2012 The Iranian government is investing heavily in hacking expertise and online propaganda in order to promote its way of life under the country’s post-Islamic Revolution regime – as well as using its new resources to tighten up control and surveillance of its citizens.This is according to Jeff Bardin, chief intelligence officer at Treadstone 71, a US-based intelligence analysis firm. He told delegates to the International Conference on Cyber Conflict (CyCon) in Tallinn, Estonia that intelligence divisions within the Iranian military are working together with former members of hacking groups to fight “Western cultural influences” and online dissidents as well as promoting Iranian foreign policy objectives.

Human rights activists have raised serious concerns about the health of Hossein Ronaghi Maleki, an Iranian blogger on hunger strike in protest at his 15-year jail sentence and the authorities’ refusal to grant him prison leave despite severe medical conditions.
Ronaghi Maleki, 27, was arrested in December 2009 following the unrest in the aftermath of Iran‘s disputed presidential elections. He was picked up from his father’s house in the city of Malekan in Iran’s province of East Azerbaijan and taken to Tehran’s notorious Evin prison where he spent 376 days in solitary confinement.

Iran hang 3 Afghan prisoners

According to local authorities in western Nimroz province the dead bodies of three Afghans who were hanged in Iran were handed over to their families.The officials further added the individuals who were hanged in Iran were residents of north-eastern Takhar province.Officials also said the two individuals were around 25 years old while the third one was around 36 years old and were hanged in connection to drugs smuggle charges.The exact number of Afghans jailed in Iran is not known yet however a number of the Afghans have been hanged over criminal and drugs smuggle charges in this country during the recent years.

Iran executes more people per capita than any other nation and the extremely high numbers killed for drug dealing and sexual orientation has provoked worldwide concern.Alistair Burt, the Foreign Office minister for the Middle East, said Iran’s record was shameful.“I am deeply concerned by the surge in executions in Iran. Reports indicate that Iran recently executed up to 63 people in one week. This shocking figure is a reminder of Iran’s already excessive use of the death penalty,” he said. “I am also extremely disturbed by Iran’s continued persecution of homosexuals and reports that four individuals were recently executed on related charges.”
