Earthquake victims face winter in tents
- Details
Iranian authorities have failed to provide adequate housing for victims of the earthquakes that rocked Eastern Azerbaijan Province
in August, despite the approach of winter.
According to the Reporters Club, 50 days after the deadly earthquake hit Eastern Azerbaijan, the authorities have failed to realize their promises to construct adequate housing for the victims before the arrival of the cold season, which means the victims will soon face -20C degree temperatures or be forced to migrate. In some locations, the debris from the quakes has not been cleared away yet, and in some villages, new construction is still at the stage of laying the foundation. The approach of winter will also make bathing inside tents impossible. Iran's vice president, Mohammadreza Rahimi, has said that officials are still aiming to complete the housing construction within two months. On August 11, two deadly earthquakes measuring 6.2 and 6 on the Richter scale rocked Eastern Azerbaijan, leaving more than 300 dead and 5,000 wounded. Source: Radio Zamaneh
