As the Iranian Judiciary continues to reschedule prominent human rights defender Mohammad Seifzadeh’s trial, he continues to refuse to attend the session. His wife and lawyer, Fatemeh Golzar, told the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran that his refusal is based on his distrust in the court’s competence.
“As per Mr. Seifzadeh’s request, I only submitted his defense bill to the court. Now we await the ruling. His prior cases were all ready for a ruling, too, and I don’t know why they kept re-scheduling court sessions. I doubt his court sessions will be renewed, unless for some reason there are preferences for holding the case this way. Mr. Seifzadeh’s position is clear, as previously announced. He will participate in none of his court sessions because he does not regard the court qualified,” said Fatemeh Golzar. |

Persian2English – Hamid Ghassemi-Shall’s sister told Rooz Online’s Fereshteh Ghazi the notice that the death sentence was sent to the Execution of Sentences Circuit Office was delivered to Hamid Ghassemi-Shall while his mother and sister were at the prison paying him a visit.Hamid’s sister Parvin Ghassemi-Shall, who accompanied her mother in the visit, said to Fereshteh Ghazi, “The execution was stayed two years ago on the order of Mr. Larijani. We were hopeful that Hamid would be released. However, since yesterday when the notice was issued, we have been extremely worried about whether Hamid will live to see another day. Yesterday’s visit was irregular. Prison visits are granted on Mondays to political prisoners held in ward 350 (the general ward), but yesterday they suddenly called us and told us to come and visit him. While we were there, they delivered the execution notice.”
Hamid Ghassemi-Shall, who has been in prison since June 14, 2008, was sentenced to death on the charges of espionage and ties to the MEK by branch 29 of the Revolutionary Court. The sentence has been upheld and confirmed by Iran’s Supreme Court. The request for clemency was rejected by the Pardon and Clemency Board. |

LONDON, April 20 (UPI) — When six world powers met with Iranian officials last week for the first time in 15 months, the talks were hailed in Europe as the first step toward a “negotiated solution” over fears of Tehran’s nuclear program. But was this really anything more than a public relations event? Two days after the talks in Istanbul, Iran’s foreign minister made clear what game he was playing — saying only a quick end to the West’s sanctions would bring them closer to the negotiating table. And then a day later, in a show of defiance, Iran flexed its “military might at a parade to mark National Army Day and its president warned against “foreign interference” from “the enemy.”The sad truth is that these talks, and the further meeting tabled in Baghdad next month, are nothing more than a smokescreen from the Iranian regime, while behind the scenes it pushes ahead with the uranium enrichment program. |

Following a recent pattern of restrictions on political prisoner rights, authorities have forbidden imprisoned labor activist Reza Shahabi from furlough or medical leave. His brother Hassan, Shahabi, told the Campaign that his physical condition is rapidly deteriorating, and he is in need of urgent medical attention.“His physical condition is very serious, he has intense neck and back pain and the medical examiner who examined him last week issued an urgent order to transfer [Shahabi] to the hospital to be operated on, but he has not been transferred. Last year he was hospitalized for some time. At that time, his doctor said Reza is not physically ready for an operation and prescribed two months of complete bed rest and 60 sessions of physical therapy for him. Unfortunately, the Judge didn’t accept the case with furlough and he only had a few physical therapy sessions in the prison clinic,” said Hassan Shahabi. |

Iranian authorities have detained at least 26 people in the city of Ahwaz and its surroundings in the southwestern province of Khuzestan during the weeks leading up to the April 15 anniversary of a 2005 protest and subsequent crackdown.
The International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran called for the immediate release of all detainees. Between late March and April 16, according to the European Ahwazi Human Rights Organisation (EAHRO), Iranian security and intelligence agents detained 26 activists to prevent the commemoration of the April 15 anniversary.
On 15 April 2005, widespread demonstrations broke out in various neighborhoods of Ahwaz in protest against ethnic discrimination and government policies which lead to substantial dislocation of Arab-Iranians and impoverishment of local communities. At the time, Iranian authorities arrested hundreds of protestors, and since then they have responded to local grievances with a heavy-handed policy of repression, detentions, torture, and even executions of activists.

The strongest message out of the nuclear talks with Iran over the weekend was that western powers are willing to tolerate even the most egregious violations and intransigence by a pariah state only if it agrees to talk nicely. For merely agreeing to talk about talking Tehran was rewarded with less pressure and more time, with the second round of negotiations to be held in late May in Baghdad, of all places. But, clearly, expecting Iran to comply with UN Security Council resolutions and its obligations under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty should not require any convincing at all, let alone a decade of negotiations. It defies common sense that the P5+1 (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany) has once again been lured by Tehran into repeating the same mistakes while expecting different results (Einstein called this the very definition of insanity). Almost 10 years of failed negotiations and constant concessions have given no reason to pin hopes on further negotiations. |
