Call for release of Iranian detainee, Shiva Nazar-Ahari

Chairwoman of European Parliament’s Subcommittee in Human Rights issued a statement calling for the immediate release of Iranian human rights activist, Shiva Nazar-Ahari.

According to Human Rights Reporters, Heidi Hautala has called for the release of Nazar-Ahari, spokesperson for the Committee of Human Rights Reporters of Iran and expressed grave concern over the legal proceedings against this detainee because some government sources are trying to link her to the dissident political group, People’s Mojahedin Organization, in order to charge her with “moharebeh” (rebellion against God) which carries the death penalty.

University professor receives 3-year jail-term

A language professor at the Islamic Azad University of Bojnourd has been sentenced to three years in prison.

According to the Kaleme website, the three-year prison sentence for Hadi Hakim Shafaei was handed down by the second branch of the revolutionary court of the city of Bojnourd. Shafaei was found guilty of “acting against national security” (two years), “propagating against the establishment” (six months), and “insulting the leader” (six months).

Human Rights Violations Monthly Report: June-July 2010


In the years following the Islamic Revolution in Iran the country went through such tumult that human rights violations gradually became the foremost concern for international organizations. The tortures and executions that took place in the eighties were only the beginning of such violations.  These violations were exacerbated during the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and reached a climax in the aftermath of public protests to the tenth presidential election. During this suppressive period, hundreds of students, women’s right activists, workers, human rights activists, and politicians were arrested and imprisoned. All of these groups were condemned to heavy sentences and many people had to go through long prison terms and flee the country.

My Father Was Tortured; Will Not Break His Hunger Strike

Rooz has conducted an exclusive interview about the latest condition of Kurdish political prisoner Rahim Rash with his son, Souran Rash. Rahim started his hunger strike 26 days ago to protest his arrest. Noting that his father’s condition is “severe,” Souran says, “My father was tortured at the Oroumieh jail and will continue his strike to protest the torture and his continued arrest. He is extremely slim and can’t walk on his own.”
